In the New Mexico Common Core State Standards, principals and teachers must carefully connect learning within and across grades. Teachers in grades 6th-8th are working together to reinforce foundational concepts and strengthen global learning skills. Students apply math concepts in “real world” situations and choose the appropriate math concepts to solve problems. Students practice intensively to ensure that they are fluent in the basics. Teachers may utilize Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to study the standards, share instructional and curriculum materials, discuss student progress and form intervention strategies. In some schools, there may be district-wide curriculum documents that describe a vertically aligned instructional program.
