Kindergarten–5th Grade

A fundamental principle of the New Mexico Common Core State Standards (NMCCSS), in mathematics as well as English language arts, is that instruction at any given grade should benefit from being informed by the overall progression that students are following across the grades.  To accomplish this goal in practice, teachers must work collaboratively with teachers in other disciplines and grades so that their teaching strategies and curriculum materials are well aligned.  The coherence of the standards throughout K-12 follows three phases of development: K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.  This grouping together of grades that share “Big Ideas” enables teachers to build a scaffolded curriculum that advances understanding grade by grade.
