Chamber Supports the New Mexico Common Core State Standards

The Board of Directors of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce strongly supports the New Mexico Common Core State Standards. The New Mexico Common Core State Standards (NMCCSS) are high-quality K-12 education standards in mathematics and English/language arts that will help ensure New Mexico’s students are prepared to succeed in college, career, and life after high school. 
 
The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce believes that every child in New Mexico deserves a world-class education that prepares them to be successful in a competitive, knowledge-based and global economy. The Chamber believes that in order to prepare our students to be competitive in a global economy, we need to give them access to the highest quality education possible—one that will teach them how to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, and that will equip them with the skills they need to become part of a robust 21st Century workforce. Implementation of the these new, highly rigorous academic standards will bring New Mexico closer to achieving educational excellence in all of our schools, something that for too long has been out of reach. The Chamber also believes that as the State implements the NMCCSS, it must implement a corresponding assessment system that is aligned to the new standards. 
 
The NMCCSS are different from past education standards in that they were designed to promote a deeper understanding of critical concepts and the practical application of knowledge. Additionally, the standards are grounded in evidence and internationally benchmarked. The NMCCSS will help New Mexico build a stronger workforce, something that is absolutely essential to business interests and the long-term economic health of the State. 
 
The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce understands the NMCCSS alone will not transform our schools, and that New Mexico must provide support for teachers and parents so that they clearly understand what students are expected to learn. Adequate resources should be targeted for teacher professional development and providing teachers with the tools and instructional strategies they need to teach to the new standards. In addition, higher education institutions and colleges of education in particular should align their teacher preparation programs with the NMCCSS. The Chamber supports the New Mexico Public Education Department’s commitment to prepare teachers, schools and districts to effectively implement NMCCSS. 
 
Background 

New Mexico, DC, and 44 other states have adopted the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards grew out of a process led by governors, educators and public school leaders to establish consistent education standards across the states that would best prepare students for the demands of the modern workplace. The standards define stated learning goals and outcomes for students. The standards do not dictate the choice of curriculum, text books, or instructional strategies that teachers use. Every state that has adopted the Common Core State Standards has done so through procedures provided by its individual state statutes and constitution. 
 
This state-led effort was coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The federal government played no role in the development of the Common Core State Standards, neither providing funding nor direction for any of the work. National organizations representing teachers, postsecondary educators, civil rights groups, students with disabilities and English language learners all provided feedback on the draft standards to the NGA Center and CCSSO.
