# CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice

There are changes in the New Mexico Common Core State Standards (NMCCSS) for students in mathematics. The NMCCSS philosophy of learning emphasizes deep understanding of the most important concepts in math and the practical application of that knowledge. As a result, the NMCCSS defines a set of eight Standards for Mathematical Practice that is meant to be integrated with the Standards for Mathematical Content in meaningful ways. The Standards for Mathematical Practice mean that all students must:

- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
- Model with mathematics to solve everyday problems
- Use appropriate tools strategically
- Strive for precision in communicating with others and in their own reasoning
- Look for and make use of structure
- Express regularity in repeated reasoning
