Materials From Superintendents Forum: August 21, 2014

We are now in year three of the New Mexico Common Core Professional Development (NMCCPD) Program with our partners, Solution Tree and Knowledge Delivery Systems. Participants learned about the numerous professional learning opportunities which will be provided this year, some of the materials provided are availble for download on the right. Topic covered included:

  • State-wide workshops in Assessment, RTI, DI, and Cultural Literacy; 
  • Leadership Support through an Academy and Virtual Principals’ Network: 
  • Regional common core mentoring support through in-person workshops and virtual learning communities 
  • Regional content-specific workshops based on identified needs of the schools 
  • Whole school participation in online course study 
  • An Exemplary Schools Program with on-site consultation, creation of evidences of effectiveness (case studies) and a year-end Showcase of NM Exemplary Schools  

During the one-day session, Dr. John Eller, nationally recognized school improvement specialist and executive coach for school administrators, shared his expertise with New Mexico superintendents, charter school directors, and BIE leaders. Dr. Eller also highlighted success stories in building professional learning communities, using conferencing and coaching skills effectively, and planning school-improvement initiatives with a focus on managing organizational change and personal transitions. New Mexico school leaders learned about the many opportunities that the PED will be offering for those schools and districts that are ready to commit to excellence with the ultimate goal of continuing the growth of student achievement. 

Participants walked away with a Common Core Implementation Toolkit which included: 

  • A newly developed New Mexico PD Planning Tool which schools can use to assess current PD needs and plan professional learning opportunities 
  • Information about each of the available PED-sponsored and funded opportunities (description, calendar, process for applying for inclusion and/or registration) 
  • A description of the type of in-person and virtual Leadership Support available through the Common Core Professional Development program 
  • Knowledge of the application process for participating in regional mentoring and content-specific workshops 
  • An awareness of the process for applying for the Exemplary Schools Program
